Jewish athletes star at world karate champs

SIX junior Jewish athletes took out medals at the recent 9th World Karate Confederation Championships in Melbourne.

SIX junior Jewish athletes took out medals at the recent 9th World Karate Confederation Championships in Melbourne.

Under the guidance of world-renowned karate master Keith Geyer, the athletes represented Australia against more than 500 competitors from 21 nations.

Kade Berman, a 12-year-old Mount Scopus Memorial College student, won two0 silver medals, one coming in the -50kg individual kumite category, earning him a spot as one of five Australians set to compete at an international team event.

Berman’s brother Corey, in year 3 also at Mount Scopus, won silver in the 8 to 9-year-old individual kata event.

Daniel Lotzoff, aged 15 from Leibler Yavneh College, took out second place in the -60kg individual kumite, while brother Gabriel, 10 years old and also from Yavneh, finished equal third in the -40kg individual kumite.

Nine-year-olds Eden Cohen and Henry Lipshut, both from Mount Scopus, won bronze medals in the -39kg and -34kg individual kumite events respectively.
