JEWISH Care Victoria has approved the construction of a new $85 million aged care precinct on St Kilda Road.

The development will include a nine-storey building, located on the Punt Road side of the current Montefiore Home site, which will have 156 residential aged care beds over seven levels and another two levels of community, health and medical services.

Named the Hannah and Daryl Cohen Family Building, the facility will also house a synagogue, gallery and retail spaces.

Jewish Care president Mike Debinski said this is a pivotal and exciting time in the organisation’s 169-year history.

“In an environment of expansive changes in the aged and community care sectors, we believe this important and innovative undertaking will have a significant and long lasting positive impact on the lives of our clients and their families,” Debinski said.

“We look forward to working closely with the team at Watpac who will help make our vision a reality.”

Jewish Care CEO Bill Appleby said he is delighted that after years of planning and negotiation, the state-of-the-art project will commence.

“This has been such an amazing collaborative effort by so many people over so many years,” he said.

“To see it finally come out of the ground will bring so much pride to the entire Jewish community.”

With construction set to commence in the coming weeks, the development known as the St Kilda Road Senior Living Precinct is expected to be completed by mid-2019.
