Leibler pressures Israel over Leifer case

FOLLOWING  a meeting this week in Jerusalem with Israel’s Minister for Justice, Ayelet Shaked, senior partner of legal firm Arnold Bloch Leibler Mark Leibler said that extradition proceedings involving the former principal of Adass Israel School, Malka Leifer, were being actively progressed.

The meeting was sought by Leibler to convey growing frustration across the Australian Jewish community and the broader community at the prolonged process of extraditing Leifer, who is wanted by Victoria Police on charges relating to child sex offences.

Leifer fled Australia in 2008. In 2014, she was arrested and placed under house arrest after Victoria Police issued an extradition request.

“Minister Shaked shares our deep concern that this process has dragged on for so long,” said Leibler.

“While the Minister reinforced that the matter was in the hands of the Israeli court system, it was a constructive meeting. I was reassured that the Israeli Government is acutely aware of the issue and that it is being advanced in a positive way.”
