THE Emanuel School has placed heritage front and centre, opening its Jewish Historic Centre this month.

More than 120 people attended the opening of the centre, which was donated by benefactors Aron and Helen Kleinlehrer.

The Kleinlehrers’ extensive collection of Jewish artifacts, books and photographs, procured over a lifetime, will form the bases for the centre and will be a unique resource for students and staff.

“The new Australian history curriculum includes a compulsory unit of work on the Holocaust at Year 10 level, and our centre will be a place where teachers from schools around Sydney, and across the country, can visit to learn more about Jewish history and the Holocaust,” Emanuel School principal Anne Hastings said.

The Kleinlehrers’ books, which include publications in German and Polish, are also available for members of the public to borrow.

The school’s immediate past president Jonathan Sesel (pictured back), former board member Michael Morton and Rabbi Jeremy Lawrence (pictured front) from The Great Synagogue marked the opening by affixing mezuzahs on the centre’s doors.
