THE Maccabi AJAX Lawn Bowls Club is set to revamp the annual Victorian Jewish Championships, with the new-look committee already planning to bolster the team heading to the next Maccabiah Games in 2017.

Brian Rosenberg has taken the reins of the club, with Steven Rubenstein and Addy Wetzler joining him on the committee and re-establishing the competition, which is set to feature the best Jewish bowlers from the around the country playing for $5000 worth of prize money.

“It’s an all-new look for the championships,” Wetzler told The AJN.

“It’s a new format and this is the first time any Jewish championship in Australia has had [significant] prize money, so there’s a bit more on the line and a bit of prestige about it.”

Wetzler says it’s important the competition showcases the best Jewish talent, including the likes of 17-year-old emerging star Elliot Rabinov and Victorian Premier League champion Matthew Kurta, who are the future of Jewish bowls in Australia.

“There are a whole lot of young Jewish bowlers who haven’t been a part of Maccabi yet and don’t even know about Maccabiah,” said Wetzler.

“We underperformed in Israel this year, so it’s a chance to build for four years’ time.”

The event will kick off in December this year, leading up to next February’s Gala Evening: Night of Champions – the final round of the event – as well as the Maccabi Interclub Barefoot Bowls Bash, which is open to every Maccabi club.

“The final itself will be played in front of a big crowd, so we want as many people to come down as possible and enjoy themselves,” Wetzler said.
