THE Maccabi NSW Basketball Club had three premiers from its five grand finalists over the weekend, bringing an end to a superb year of competition.

The club’s Premier League Lakers took on Dulwich Sonics, who finished less than seven per cent ahead of Maccabi on the ladder, in a cracking encounter.

The Lakers raced out to an 18-10 lead and on the back of some strong work from returning players Josh Cohen and Brad Rosen, the side
was able to take a 41-40 advantage at half-time.

But a poor second half from Maccabi saw the team lose its lead and fall behind the eventual winners 91-76 to finish runner-up.

In the under-14 Maccabi derby, it was the Mavericks who continued their undefeated season with a gritty 22-19 win over the Jets.

Darren Saacks (12 points) starred for the premiers, with help from teammates Jeremy Stein, Dean Mendelowitz, Robert Feyer, Tom Lee and Matthew McCarthy.

The Jets were led by Jack Burman, who, along with Michael Benchoam, Rudi Sukkienik and Grant Saacks, put up a brave fight against their fellow Jewish side.

The under-14 girls’ Cheetahs got up 25-19 over CYS to clinch the Division 2 title, with Martine Agranat leading her team to victory with 18 points.

The Cheetahs put in hard work all season and were finally rewarded with a premiership, which recognises the efforts of Danielle Tischman, Pnina Hagege, Amy Altman, Sabrina Penkin, Jessica Shagrin, Brianna Gadeley and Rebecca Dunkel, who teamed together well.

Maccabi’s under-18 boys’ Celtics were also victorious in their grand final, defeating Inner City 38-28 in a superb grand-final display.

The Celtics not only matched it with the minor premiers, but they were able to run all over them, with JJ Fuchs starring with 21 points.

Maccabi led from start to finish, with Josh Berg, Jono Serebro, Daniel Smuskowitz, Nadav Losky, llan Kessler and Brett Gordon all chipping in a great team effort.

The club also held its annual awards night recently, as the top players from the junior teams were awarded the Most Valuable Player awards.
