Mixed touch team captures title

MACCABI Touch Football Club’s biggest season yet enjoyed a fitting end on Sunday, as the Mac Touch Mixed Firsts claimed the Mixed Division 1b title.

The side produced its best performance of the season to prevail 7-4 against Mohicans, earning the club a summer championship.

Other Maccabi squads weren’t as lucky in their finals campaign, as the Chiefs were agonisingly downed in extra-time for the Mixed Division 2b play-off and the Rabbitohs side was out-classed in the Women’s Division 3 final earlier that morning.

Mac Touch Firsts displayed tremendous patience and quality in their hit out, going into the break level at 3-all before steaming away in the second-half.

Robbie Ezekiel was in sparkling form, Josh Goldberg delivered two superb solo tries, Hayley Chester stepped up in her first mixed grand final, and Hilary Scandrett scored to put the icing on the cake just before full-time.

The Chiefs’ game was a fast-paced thriller, as they traded tries with their opponents from the first whistle. Brothers Ben and Daniel Kochan sliced open the defence a number of times, while Daniel Kerner and Steven Barrett helped the trio of Ilana Krigstein, Alice Kriesler and Sophie Weisz get through a mountain of work.

When Zac Seidler sped past the defence to score late in the second half, the result looked in the Chiefs’ favour. But it wasn’t to be as the side suffered a premature exit from finals.

Two weeks ago bad weather wreaked havoc on the club’s Sunday Comp Finals Series, but the belated grand final, played on Sunday afternoon between Sironen-Burgess and Reigning Champs, saw a scintillating finale to the season that showcased the high standard of Maccabi’s weekly league.

David Weiner set up brother Joel for the match-winning try in the final moments to give Sironen-Burgess a 7-6 victory over the Reigning Champs, which, true to their name, had in fact won the competition last season.

The Champs’ potent quartet of Daniel Ezekiel, Jordan Mundell, Chad Awerbuch and Robbie Goldberg tormented the defence with their movement, while David Bloch scored a spectacular try off a cross-field bomb.

But Zak Michael, Tali Ezekiel and Adam Ezekiel helped claw the eventual winners back into the contest, which was the defending title-holders first loss of the entire season.

Earlier, Adam Karras and Marcus Kosmin inspired a young Quick Dumps 2 outfit to the Division 2 premiership in a 3-2 win over Would You Like Tries With That.
