THE newly-crowned Maccabi NSW Club of the Year – Maccabi Netball – has begun the 2017 winter season with typical spirit and determination.

In the opening two rounds of the North Shore Netball Association (NSNA) competition, six out of Maccabi’s 16 teams remain undefeated, and nine others have had only one loss.

A highlight of round two, played on April 8 in Willoughby, was Maccabi 1’s exciting 38-all draw in grade B2 against Willoughby 3.

The taller Willoughby side, who edged out Maccabi in last year’s grand final, dominated the first quarter with sweeping attacking raids.

But the Maccabi women regrouped and kept a positive mindframe, changing tactics to use their speed and skills to find space, which led to a goal streak in their favour.

Goals were evenly scored between the teams in the final two quarters, and in the end nothing could separate them in this high quality match.

The Maccabi 2 team had the narrowest of losses, 31-32, against Willoughby United 5 in grade B4.

Following the round’s matches, a Maccabiah junior netball training session was held.

Round three of the NSNA competition will be on April 29, which also marks the opening round of the Randwick netball competition that features Maccabi junior teams.

In 2016, Maccabi Netball Club had 10 teams that made the grand final, four of them going on to become premiers.
