PERTH Hebrew Congregation (PHC) has appointed Rabbi Daniel Lieberman of Britain as its new chief rabbi, to take the place of Rabbi Dovid Freilich, its veteran chief rabbi, who led the congregation for 30 years.

The new rabbi will be only the sixth rabbi in PHC’s 125-year history.

Reporting to congregants, PHC president Julian Sher said Rabbi Lieberman of Liverpool will take up his new role in WA in early 2018 after clearing immigration formalities.

“The PHC board of management is confident that Rabbi Lieberman is an outstanding successor to our beloved Rabbi Freilich. His qualifications, skills, experience and his warm and dynamic personality will be great assets to the PHC and broader Perth Jewish community.

“PHC members who met Rabbi and Rebbetzin [Liat] Lieberman during their recent visit to Perth, will be able to testify to this. Rabbi Lieberman is currently the rabbi of the Allerton Hebrew Congregation in Liverpool, UK, where he is the senior halachic authority for the Liverpool Kashrut Commission, halachic adviser to the Liverpool Chevra Kadisha, governor of King David School, chief adviser to the Jewish Education Committee of King David School and the founding member of Merseyside Jewish Council,” stated Sher.

Rabbi Lieberman and Rebbetzin Liat, who also has a great deal of experience in community building and youth education, “will aim to positively impact and engage PHC members of all ages and levels of observance, as well as encourage increased participation by non-affiliated members of the broader Perth Jewish community”, said Sher.

“At this time of generational change, we express our thanks and gratitude to Rabbi Freilich and Rabbanit Aviva. There will be ample opportunity for the community to thank him more formally in due course for his insightful, compassionate and dedicated leadership and spiritual guidance over the past 30 years,” he said.
