New synthetic oval in Waverley
A NEW synthetic football field was launched at Waverley Oval on Monday night (May 16). The new oval will be used by a host of sports clubs and teams, including Maccabi football clubs.

Hakoah Sydney City East Football Club president Mike Katz said the facility is amazing.
“It’s one of the best I’ve seen in terms of the quality of the ground and the atmosphere,” Katz told The AJN this week.
“Most of our teams are playing on the oval now and we hope that by next year we will be able to work with the council so that all teams can train on the oval twice a week.”
Katz said the synthetic oval is preferable because it can be used in all weather conditions, the grass doesn’t need to be rejuvenated so it can be used three times as much throughout the year and the quality of the field is higher, so players don’t need to worry about a ball bouncing over their foot on an uneven surface.
“We are playing at the top level in the state in the National Premier League, but we are determined to remain an eastern suburbs Jewish club and so a facility like this in the heart of the eastern suburbs is important,” Katz said.
“A lot of the players said they walked down to training so we truly are an eastern suburbs club.”
The club previously trained at Hensley Athletics Field, where it plays home games, but has made a significant cost savings by moving to the new oval which is in the heart of the eastern suburbs.
Waverley mayor Sally Betts said the field is a great new addition for residents in Waverley Council.
“Waverley is only 9.2 square kilometres and we have 16 schools, and we just do not have enough playing fields for our children,” Betts said.
“This synthetic field is an amazing addition to our playing fields because we can play on it all year round.
“To see the joy of the children, when they run around and don’t get hurt if they fall because the field is quite soft, is amazing.”
Maccabi NSW football coordinator Mick Vasin thanked Betts for the new oval.
“I applaud Sally Betts and the council on this great initiative that will help athletes,” Vasin said.
“The ground is outstanding and suitable for first class clubs to train, as well as local footballers.
“In fact, all four of the Maccabi football clubs – the futsal club, the senior football club, the junior football club and Hakoah – will be using it at various times throughout the year.
