Maccabi defeated 13th placed Killara West Pymble, 29-5, at Loftberg Oval in Pymble, but the scoreline flattered the team.
For much of the second half, Killara attacked relentlessly without success.
Maccabi captain Keith Friedlander said: “It was scrappy, messy and not as clean as we would have liked, but we got the points and that’s what we came here to do.
“We were gutsy, and our defence showed that, but letting in the early try goes against what we stand for.”
Friedlander said the team has a lot of areas to improve on and they need to start executing their game plan, and coach Brendon Hall agrees.
Hall said: “We are not clinical enough, we are not going forward enough and we are missing when it comes to the details. We have the personnel but we are not playing and executing as a team.”
He said it’s easy to make excuses, and some have weight, but the team has to play better.
“We have a lot of new combinations and the club is building for the future and giving some of the young guys a real crack,” said Hall.
“I think at the moment we are blooding some new young guys and it’s positive for the future.”
He said Tony Bean and Joji Kurosaki were the stand-out players.
The win moved Maccabi up to third spot on the Meldrum Cup ladder, eight points behind competition leader Redfield.
Maccabi will return home to Lyne Park in Rose Bay to face the lowly-ranked Seaforth on Saturday.
