Singer Josh Piterman is embarking on his first solo concert tour of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane next month to perform his favourite songs. Danny Gocs reports.

IT took eight years for musical theatre star Josh Piterman’s debut album – which came out last year – to come to fruition, delayed by his stage commitments in shows such as West Side Story, Cats, An Officer And A Gentleman and Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

However, the long wait was worthwhile as the self-titled album reached number one on the ARIA Charts for classical/crossover.

Now Piterman is embarking on a concert tour of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane next month featuring many of the hits from the CD including John Farnham’s Burn For You, Chris Isaak’s Wicked Game, Radio Head’s Creep, the Goo Goo Dolls’ Iris and Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.

“The Aria success gave me the confidence to do a tour based around this album and people want to hear it live as well as hearing hits that they know and love,” he told The AJN.

“My style is Bocelli meets Bublé – it’s classical music with a pop rock element; it’s more off the cuff than a classical concert.

“I wanted to take some of my favourite pop and rock songs and give them a classical twist, and translate some songs into Italian and Spanish. I don’t think its been done in the classical/crossover world before.”

It will be Piterman’s first solo concert tour and the first singing tour he has undertaken since he spent 18 months as a member of The Ten Tenors, which toured around Australia and overseas in 2008-9.

“Doing a solo concert tour is very different to touring with a big musical like Beautiful,” said Piterman, who had a lead role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which played for more than a year in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide in 2017-18.

“I’m looking forward to doing a live tour, but it is both daunting and exciting.”

The concert will feature songs from his CD as well as classic show tunes such as Phantom of the Opera’s Music of the Night, Time To Say Goodbye, Nessun Dorma and The Prayer.

And he plans to include a new song that he has written with his girlfriend Charlotte titled Love Is All We Need.

“I want to sing songs that I love, that are nostalgic to me and rekindle special memories in my life – I was brought up in the 1990s and that’s the era that I know and love,” he said.

At his concert Piterman will sing in English, Italian, Spanish and French with the backing of a rock band and a string trio.

“I hope this is the start of many concert tours as I am passionate about this style of music.”

Piterman has been in London for the past few weeks for auditions for future West End shows.

His self-titled CD was released on Fanfare Records and distributed by Sony Music.
