POLICE are investigating a swindler who has been targeting homes and synagogues in Caulfield, Elsternwick and St Kilda East asking for money.

The man, who is believed to be of Middle Eastern or Israeli descent, has approached homes and synagogues with a story of his car breaking down.

He asks the resident or staff member if he can use their phone to call the RACV. He then asks to be lent some cash to pay because he does not have RACV membership.

As well as cash extortion, there have been reports of stolen property.

Local police have been investigating the series of incidents -— most of which have targeted elderly people.

Detectives believe the burglaries are being perpetrated by one man and it is understood that their investigations have revealed a suspect.

The Community Security Group (CSG) is also aware of the incidents, sending a circular to Jewish community organisations and schools.

The CSG recommends that should somebody approach a community building or home with a similar story, to politely turn them away.

The circular says if it is safe, to make a note of the following details: what the man is wearing, which direction he goes in, and details of the car he leaves in. They are then advised to contact the Caulfield Police Station on (03) 9524 9555 or ring 000.
