A group of young Kesser Torah College (KTC) boys came together to form a school rugby team in 2012, coached by teacher Dean Cohen and KTC principal Rabbi Dr Noteh Glogauer.
Last week that team, still comprising many of its founding members, scored a convincing victory in its final game of the season against the prestigious Shore School, winning 34-5.
Captained by scrumhalf Mendel Gestetner, the team, playing in the 16-year age group, took to the field with no reserves on the bench.
“The boys demonstrated an incredible amount of growth and resilience, and have improved immensely in both skill and confidence.
“They should all be congratulated on demonstrating sportsmanship to the highest level,” Rabbi Glogauer said.
“I was so proud to stand on the sideline and cheer on our team as they supported one another throughout the game. As they stood shoulder to shoulder against a well-seasoned team, they rose to the occasion with confidence.”
Cohen said the boys had shown their commitment to the team by turning up for training at 6.45am through the cold months of winter. “The training was evidenced by their impressive performance in both the scrums and lineouts,” he said.
“While there were standout players on the day, all deserve to be commended on their commitment and tenacity on the field, whether in defence or attack.”
Rabbi Glogauer added: “Since its inception in 2003, KTC has grown in all areas and embodies teamwork, strategy, discipline and results.”
