IF you overindulged at the Rosh Hashanah table this year, or simply want to get in shape for 5776 … this is the challenge for you.

The 2015 Fitness and Weight Loss Community Challenge – co-organised by The AJN, Jewish House, Maccabi NSW and Body Express – will see participants improve their fitness or shed some unwanted kilos over eight weeks – all while raising money for Jewish House.

Among those who have signed up are AJN deputy editor Joshua Levi, Jewish House CEO Rabbi Mendel Kastel, Waverley mayor Sally Betts and The Apprentice Australia winner Andrew Morello.

The challenge will start on Monday, October 12, with the team at Body Express giving participants three different exercise options, monitoring their progress and conducting weekly nutrition and diet seminars.

Speaking to The AJN, Betts said she encourages “all of the community to get fit and healthy as a good role model for our children”.

Betts said she will have her personal trainer, Waverley councillor Leon Goltsman, with her every step of the way, providing “personal encouragement in case I falter”.

Describing Jewish House as “the most amazing organisation”, she said, “I know from personal experience they are completely non-denominational, they care for people in need in a crisis no matter who you are or what religion you are, and to have an organisation like that in Waverley is absolutely fantastic.”

Rabbi Kastel said he is “enthusiastic” about participating in the challenge, but joked, “my wife is more enthusiastic than I am”.

“I think it’s a very good idea and we are definitely excited to put it on for the community and have a bit of fun with it,” he said. “If we can take a few hundred kilos off the community we think it will be a positive thing.”

Owner of Body Express Jamie Hayes said, “By joining our eight-week challenge you can increase your physical activity, improve your fitness, lose weight, get updated on the latest in diet and weight loss, inspire others and help our community. We encourage you to join up and enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.”
