Singing for the stars
AUSTRALIAN singer Adam Katz is only 24, but the release this month of his debut single Stars is the culmination of years of hard work.
“I’ve always loved music and I sang before I could walk,” explains Katz. “My family loves me telling the story of how I was singing on a holiday to Hayman Island, even though I was only eight months old at the time.”
Katz is very proud of the self-penned Stars, which was produced by British ace Richard Cutmore, who has worked with music industry giants Mariah Carey, Justin Timberlake and Michael Buble.
“The song is about two lovers drawn together by fate who are an absolute mess when they’re together,” says Katz.
“They push themselves apart, but they are truly meant to be and the stars push them back together.”
Katz draws inspiration for most of his songs from his own life, but says Stars is not autobiographical – it was just that the concept of star-crossed lovers appealed to him.
The release of Stars is accompanied by a promotional tour around the country, which kicked off last month at Upstairs Beresford in Sydney.
Katz is an ambassador for Jeans for Genes Day and will be donating a percentage of sales of Stars to the charity. He has also written a jingle for the charity’s television advertisements.
“It’s a cool partnership to have,” Katz says of Jeans for Genes. “It’s great to be an advocate for everything they stand for and to support them in their endeavours by promoting their cause and getting their name out there.”
Katz, a graduate of Sydney’s Reddam House, says a second single is likely to be released in November and an album in March 2014.
Describing his musical style as “melodic pop and R&B”, Katz plans to travel to Britain to work closely with producer Cutmore on more material.
“I’ve worked hard over years, performing and writing. I am far from an overnight success,” he notes.
Katz got his start in the music industry in 2001 when his school music teacher recommended him to do backing vocals for Australian band the Robertson Brothers. Now he’s keen to create his own niche in the music industry.
“I want to release records and perform as much music as I can and collaborate with musicians and producers,” he says.
