Students fight to keep Yeshivah principal

Yeshivah College principal Rabbi Yehoshua Smukler was on the brink of leaving the school after a fall-out with the board today (Tuesday) but the community continues to rally around him.

Teachers cancelled classes in the middle of the day in the high school so they could come together and try and help him and tonight students started contacting The AJN offering their support for the principal.

Below is a message written to The AJN by one student.

Here we are again.

After all the effort exerted in trying to mend our schools reputation, and attempting to make our community a better place, we find ourselves back on the brink of anarchy.

It’s true I’m only a student; I don’t know the intricacies of Rabbi Smukler’s current predicament, nor am I entirely aware of all the details regarding Yeshivah’s plight.

This lack of knowledge however, appears to be common amongst the general populous within our community.

Additionally, while there are those who are more informed and those less, regardless of individuals understanding I don’t believe it any ones right to challenge a mans personal decisions on such a fragile issue.

As a student in Yeshivah, one thing I can do however, is relate my personal experience with Rabbi Smukler.

As a teenager going through year 7 and 8 I regret to admit, my attendance to classes was dismal.

I would appear late, disrupt then leave early.

Furthermore, this wasn’t the average case of a difficult student, where in frustration the teacher ends up having the child removed and the class reconvenes unperturbed.

No, this misdemeanour was prevalent amongst numerous students who in the disorder of Yeshivah’s search for a new Principal, took advantage of the lackadaisical disciplinary system.

This is not to say that everything changed upon Rabbi Smuklers arrival.

This is to say that to date, the school has never been as professional, as well managed or as safe as it is under his leadership.

Losing Rabbi Smukler would be detrimental to the high standard of education provided by Yeshivah College and would undo so much of the invaluable progress we have made up until this point.

I implore you, don’t let this situation become, brother against his brother, friend against friend or community against community.

Lets band together and help fight of this hostile engagement and instead work to a better future.

This action starts by keeping Rabbi Smukler and assisting him in continuing the warm and educative environment that Yeshivah has become.
