THIS week’s eightball and snooker grand finals – part of the 2012 Victorian Jewish Open – will feature two stellar match-ups, with Karen Winter set to take on Adam Wisniewski and Michael Lang preparing to battle Tony Fridman.

Winter, the current eightball club champion, is just the second female in the history of the Victoria Maccabi Snooker Club to make the final of the event.

“I’ll give it a good crack,” Winter told The AJN.

“This is my first year at Maccabi, which has been a very good year, so hopefully it gets a bit better.”

Winter has only been in Australia since 2003, after living in London and playing eightball for 30 years.

And after taking out the club championship with Abi Newman, she now hopes to add a Jewish Open title to her name.

But Wisniewski will be out to ruin the Londoner’s fairytale, hoping to record his second win at the tournament after previously taking it out in 2010.

“He’s an A-grade player,” Winter said.

“We know each other and when I played him two years ago in the semifinal, he won 4-2, so I hope to return the favour this year.”

In snooker, former Jewish Open winner Michael Lang knocked out his son and current club champion Brendan to secure a spot in the final against veteran Fridman.

“There were some interesting emotions beating Brendan,” Michael said.

“He’s a really good player, so I was torn between the best for my kid and the best for me.”

Michael is the current club convener, was runner-up in the club championship, and has won the event in the past.

But Fridman, who has several Jewish Open trophies in his cabinet, will be a tough opponent to get past, which Michael said will be a mighty challenge.

“With a bit of luck, hopefully I can win it,” Michael said.

“Tony is a tough player, he’s been around for a long time and I’ll have to have my wits about me to give him a run for his money.

“But I’m confident I can best him and I’d love to walk away with the title; it’d be a great feeling to get on top of a really good opponent and it would cap off a good year.”

The Victorian Jewish Open will take place at 7.45pm tonight (Thursday) at the Kings Entertainment Complex (Melway: 88 A4).
