Swimming for a good cause

THE Maccabi National Swimathon continued over the weekend in Sydney and Perth, with more than $85,000 raised so far for the Multiple Sclerosis Society (MS), and the Australian team heading to next year’s Maccabiah Games in Israel.

“It was a great community event,” Maccabi Swimming Club president Amanda Penkin told The AJN.

“We raised a fortune for MS Australia and Maccabi, and we’d like to see everyone participate again next year to try and beat our total from this year.”

NSW had nine teams take part in the event at the Gloria and John Eisman Pool at Moriah College, with more than 100 participants hitting the water for a total of 12 hours.

The Sydney teams included Mount Sinai College, Moriah College, Emanuel School, Team Eden, Triathlon Sydney, North Shore Gefilte Fish, Green Machine, Brian’s Buddies and Team Maccabi Swimming Club.

“The decorum and respect everyone had for each other was ‘awe-swum’ for all involved,” Penkin said.

“It was one of our objectives to get the whole community involved and we had not only swimmers in the pool, but also triathletes, basketballers and cricketers.

“So a big thank you must go out to all the swimmers and contributors for a terrific effort.”

The Maccabi Swimming Club has also kicked off its season with strong recent performances at the Victorian Jewish Swimming Championships and an intense competition at Nelson Bay, before a haul of 15 medals were won at the West Illawarra Region Carnival.

The squad members Rachel Jablonka, Baedon Malek, Jarred and Brody Elbourne, Damon Glick, Aiden and Gaby Goodridge, Leah Grill, Leah Menaker, Alon Pajor, Ben Potash, Leila Reuven, Sabrina and Samuel Penkin and Josh Zwi are all set for a big season ahead.

The club will be looking to continue its strong form when several of its swimmers take part in the Sea Folly 63rd NSW Jewish Championships, set to take place at Des Renford Aquatic Centre in Maroubra on February 10 next year.
