AFTER months of preparation, hundreds of thousands of Jews across the world are set to celebrate a Shabbat like no other this weekend … and The AJN is on hand to help.

According to Jewish law, it is a requirement to have two challahs rather than just one at Shabbat meals. So to help you keep that mitzvah – and be part of the Shabbat Project – we’re buying one for you.

The AJN has teamed up with Glick’s bakeries across the country to support the global initiative, aimed at giving Jews of all levels of observance a chance to experience the magic of Shabbat. All you have to do is cut out the coupon on page 3 of this week’s issue, take it to your nearest Glick’s store before it closes this Friday, buy one large sweet challah, and you’ll receive another one absolutely free.

National editor of The Australian Jewish News Zeddy Lawrence said, “What’s Friday night without challah? What’s Friday night without The AJN? They’re both integral parts of a traditional Australian Shabbat dinner, so what better way for us to help our readers take part in the project than to pay for their second challah?”

Welcoming The AJN challah deal, Sydney’s Shabbat Project leader Rabbi Benji Levy said, “The single reason that the project is such a success is due to each organisation and each individual showing us all what community is really about! They call it ‘buy one, get one free’ but the truth is that whenever we invest in our community we get so much more in return – looking forward to keeping it together!”

Melbourne Shabbat Project coordinator Rabbi Moshe Kahn added, “Just as the challah unites a diversity of ingredients ultimately creating one beautiful cohesive loaf, so the Shabbat Project will unite Jews from diverse backgrounds around the world creating one beautiful people.”

Glick’s founder Mendel Glick said, “We’re delighted to support this initiative. The Shabbat Project is a fantastic idea and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.”

The Shabbat Project was launched in South Africa last year, with more than 55,000 members of the community taking part.

This weekend, as the initiative goes global, events are being held in all Australia’s major cities and more than 230 other locations worldwide.
