VICTORIA’S Jewish community groups will share in a $44,000 grant pool from the Brumby Government to fund projects promoting understanding of the state’s cultural diversity.

The grants, which form part of a $360,000 funding boost for 54 Victorian community organisations, are aimed at strengthening understanding between different cultural groups.

A number of Jewish organisations — including the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC), the Jewish Museum of Australia, the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV), the Zionist Council of Victoria, the National Council of Jewish Women of Australia and the Shalom Association — will each receive funding of between $5000 and $18,000.

Most of the money will go towards existing initaitives, such as the ADC’s Multifaith Future Leaders Program and an annual JCCV dinner that brings the Jewish and Anglican communities together.
Premier John Brumby visited Melbourne’s Immigration Museum to announce the grant, which is the latest in the Multifaith/Interfaith Grants Program.

Brumby highlighted the Jewish community as playing an instrumental role in shaping Victoria into an inclusive and welcoming society.

“In recent years, Jewish community leaders have upheld the goodwill and understanding that support our way of life in Victoria” Brumby said.

“Such leadership and guidance from Victoria’s Jewish community has helped to build our strong and modern multicultural society.”

He emphasised that the state encompasses people from more than 200 different countries, who follow 120 different faiths.

Minister Assisting the Premier on Multicultural Affairs James Merlino added, “These grants are another way of promoting and strengthening understanding between cultures and celebrating Victoria’s rich, vibrant diversity. Each and every one of these grants is an important investment in the future of Victoria.
