Tzipi Livni, who during a 20-year Knesset term served as acting prime minister, deputy prime minister, minister of justice, and foreign affairs minister among other roles, will deliver the Anti-Defamation Commission (ADC) Gandel Oration in Melbourne and Sydney at the end of August.
It will be her first visit to Australia.
“The ADC and Gandel Philanthropy are enormously proud to host Tzipi Livni, once described as the most powerful woman in Israeli politics since Golda Meir and chosen by Time Magazine as one of the most influential people in the world,” ADC chairman Dvir Abramovich said.
“Ms Livni has played a powerful role in many of Israel’s major historical milestones,” he continued, labelling her “a distinguished and acclaimed stateswoman of the highest order”.
“Drawing from more than two decades of leadership, Ms Livni possesses an unparalleled expertise on Israeli affairs, national security and the Middle East, and is keen to share her incomparable insights with us,” he said.
“We have no doubt that audiences will be riveted by her candid, passionate and up-to-the minute perspectives on the pressing issues confronting the Jewish people.”
As a member of former Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon’s inner circle, Livni helped plan Israel’s unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2005. Later that year, together with Sharon and other political figures, she helped form the Kadima Party.
Prior to the 2015 elections, she founded the Hatnua party and joined forces with Labour leader Isaac Herzog to form the Zionist Union alliance.
As foreign affairs minister, she led peace negotiations with the Palestinian Authority and became the face of the peace process in Israeli politics.
