Walkley nod for doco

FORMER Australian Jewish News editor Dan Goldberg and Jewish filmmaker Danny Ben Moshe have been nominated for a Walkley Award for their documentary Code of Silence.
The one-hour documentary, which screened on ABC1 in August, followed child sexual abuse victim Manny Waks in his fight for justice and explored the toll it has taken on his family.
It is one of six films to have been shortlisted for the coveted award.
Goldberg told The AJN the nomination was a “huge honour”.
“The Walkleys are the pinnacle of Australian journalism and we’re pretty stoked to be in the running,” he said.
Noting the subject matter of the documentary was a “very topical, very sensitive, very confronting issue”, Goldberg added, “What we hope from the film is that it gives voice to the voiceless.”
“Manny Waks is the only one of dozens of victims who have spoken out and we do hope that the film in some way gave a voice to those who feel they can’t yet speak out.”
Ben Moshe lamented that he doesn’t “think anything has changed” since the film went to air in terms of institutional and communal reconciliation.
“Unfortunately, positions remain very hardened and I guess maybe some people in the Jewish community don’t want to see or hear the message in the film.”
