Warlow’s favourites from the stage
CONCERT REVIEW by Danny Gocs. Anthony Warlow felt very much at home as he strode onto the stage of Hamer Hall at Arts Centre Melbourne for his cabaret-style show Direct from Broadway (June 20-21) where he performed some of his favourites from hit musicals.
Warlow is fondly remembered for his lead role in The Phantom of the Opera and within a few minutes was delighting the audience with his rendition of Music of the Night.
For this show Warlow shared the stage with American Tony Award winner Faith Prince, an experienced stage and TV performer.
It was while Warlow was playing Oliver ‘Daddy’ Warbucks in the musical Annie on Broadway that he met Prince, who played Miss Hannigan, and the two stars came up with the idea of Direct from Broadway.
The concept was simple: perform hits from the musicals, sometimes solo and sometimes as a duet.
One of their first duets in the show is Do You Love Me from Fiddler On The Roof, beautifully singing the number that Tevye and Golde sang in Anatevka.
The hits flowed from productions such as Guys and Dolls, Annie, The Mad Show and Gypsy, interspersed by light-hearted banter.
Both Warlow and Prince have superb voices and commanding stage presence, and were ably supported by a 30-member orchestra.
The applause was loudest for Warlow when he sang well-known songs and the audience would have liked to hear more numbers from favourite shows such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Cabaret instead of lesser-known songs.
