AFTER a disappointing performance at the London Olympic Games last year, Israeli windsurfer Lee Korzits returned to her winning ways by taking out her third RS:X World Windsurfing Championships in Brazil.
AFTER a disappointing performance at the London Olympic Games last year, Israeli windsurfer Lee Korzits returned to her winning ways by taking out her third RS:X World Windsurfing Championships in Brazil.
The 28-year-old held a 21-point lead heading into the final race and ended up winning the title by 16 points ahead of Great Britain’s Bryony Shaw.
“I am very happy, it’s my third consecutive title and now I’ll have to [get] one more tattoo,” Korzits, who has a tattoo representing each of her titles, said.
Korzits missed out on a medal in London, despite leading for much of the event and labelled her win in Brazil as the “sweetest world title”.
“I’ve had to pick myself up and overcome a lot of mental and physical obstacles,” she said.
It was the perfect start to her preparation for the next Olympic Games, set to take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Korzits stood on the podium with compatriot Maayan Davidovich, who was just as impressive throughout the tournament on her way to a third-place finish, seven points behind Shaw.
Davidovich missed out on a place on the Israeli team at the London Games, but will now be in strong contention to make the delegation heading to the next Olympics.
Meanwhile, both Nimrod Mashiah and Shahar Zubari took to the waters in the men’s competition, but both failed to finish in the top three.
Mashiah was the better of the two and was in medal contention throughout the event, but eventually missed out after the final races, finishing in sixth position.
Zubari was also disappointing as he finished one behind Mashiah in seventh, continuing his poor form from the London Olympics last year.
