In June it was announced that a Governance Review Panel would establish a new constitution for the centre and a new structure to oversee all Yeshivah organisations, by the end of year, with the trustees and interim committee of management (ICOM) stepping down by December 31.
However, last week the trustees told The AJN that target date had been overly ambitious.
“The panel has been working hard to meet this deadline and although very close to finalising the new structure, will not be in a position to release this to us and the public with enough time to implement the changes by then,” the trustees said.
“We have recently been advised that they believe elections will take place in March, with the set-up of all structures, constitutions and associated announcements taking place before then.”
The trustees said they understand people may be disappointed, but stressed that it is important that the work is done properly, rather than rushed to meet a deadline.
“We are confident that the process is working and that the outcome will be very positive and enable the centre to move forward.”
They also praised the ICOM, which has been able to meet most of its goals that the ICOM set out earlier this year.
The ICOM, which will be disbanded as of December 31, was installed by the trustees in the wake of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse amid calls for an overhaul of Yeshivah’s management.
It has since set up a victim redress scheme, met with many victims of child sexual abuse, and reviewed all child safety and occupational, health and safety issues at the school.
It was created to be an interim board while the Governance Review Panel worked with the trustees to set up a new structure for the centre.
“We recognise and are genuinely appreciative for the privilege of having run the Yeshivah Centre over the last six months,” the ICOM said this week.
