Yogev wins Chanukah competition

RONNIE Yogev is the winner of BJE and The AJN’s Chanukah competition.

RONNIE Yogev is the winner of BJE and The AJN’s Chanukah competition.

BJE students at public schools across NSW were asked to write questions and answers as if they were AJN journalists interviewing a character from the story of Chanukah.

12-year-old Yogev, from Bellevue Hill Public School, interviewed a child playing with a sevivon.

“We have been learning about Chanukah for most of this term and I thought that would be a good person to speak to,” she told The AJN after she was named as the winner.

Yogev asked a child during the interview what it was like to hide and spend all day studying the Torah.

“It’s hard, but I’m used to it now. I barely ever see the daylight now,” she wrote.

“I miss playing with my non-Jewish friends, instead I’ve got this boring little sevivon to play with.

“But it’s worth it and I wouldn’t give up being Jewish for anything.”

Yogev has attended BJE classes for seven year and said she learned a lot about Judaism.

BJE principal Rachele Schonberger said the kids loved the competition.

“The competition really got the kids very excited about something different and the chance to have their work published in The AJN created a great buzz,” Schonberger said.

“We are really grateful that we were able to work with The AJN and we look forward to doing it again.”

AJN national editor Zeddy Lawrence said he is very proud that the paper is working with the community.

“BJE do great work in schools across NSW and we are proud to work alongside them and continue educating the next generation of Jewish leaders,” Lawrence said.

The nine runner-ups were Yonatan Freund and Nathan Peisah from Rose Bay Public School, Ari Shapiro from St Ives North Public School, Masaha Basman from Bellevue Hill Public School, Naomi Libman and Dheanna Eller from Woollahra Public School, Ellen Rowley from Birchgrove Public School and Itay Shachar from Lindfield Public School.
