EMERGING golf star Leron Mazin has created history at the Maccabi Golf three-day challenge at Port Fairy and Warrnambool Golf Clubs, becoming the youngest ever winner of a major club event when he shot a tournament record 128 points.

Mazin, aged 17 and heading into year 12 at Mount Scopus, led from start to finish in an impeccable display, topping the leaderboard, ahead of Tom Krulis (115) and Nathan Cohen (111).

“I was really surprised that I managed to play so well and consistently,” Mazin, who plays regularly at Yarra Yarra Golf Club off a handicap of 18, told The AJN.

“I just went in wanting to do as well as I could, but everything seemed to go right and I’m really happy with the result.

“After the first nine holes I was playing some good golf and I really tried to keep going the way I was and not drop any shots, which I managed to do.”

Over the first two rounds of play in Port Fairy, Krulis, Nathan Cohen, Alon Cohen, Geoff Henschel and Charles Akkerman tried valiantly to keep up with the young gun, but were left in his wake as he shot 44 and 42 respectively.

Mazin then took advantage of his healthy lead heading into the final round in Warrnambool, shooting two-over par to record 26 points from the opening nine holes.

He managed to maintain his lead on the back nine to shoot 42 for the round and secure the win, which earned him a spot on the Victorian team for next year’s President’s Cup in Perth.

Meanwhile, Lorelle Krulis took out the ladies’ event by nine points.

Krulis shot her way to a total of 110 from the three rounds to edge out the next best Iris Lustig-Maor on 101 and Vickie Lamm a further three points back on 98.

Meanwhile, the club is preparing for the 2014 Jewish Golf Championships, set to take place at the Cranbourne Golf Club on January 19.
