Young guns fire at Vic Champs
THE 59th annual Victorian Jewish Swimming Championships were held recently, with some exciting results from the junior stars of the pool in the lead-up to the 2013 Maccabiah Games.
THE 59th annual Victorian Jewish Swimming Championships were held recently, with some exciting results from the junior stars of the pool in the lead-up to the 2013 Maccabiah Games.
The event saw the long course season kick off, as well as the official commencement of the Maccabiah qualifying period for swimming hopefuls from the junior, open and masters categories.
The championships, which were held at Haileybury College’s 50m pool, attracted 72 competitors, 12 of those competing for NSW Maccabi Swimming.
The open men’s blue ribbon 100m freestyle was taken out by 18-year-old Julian Kowal in 56.56s, with the minor placings awarded to Jesse Klass (NSW) and Adrian Hirsh.
National swimmer Marni Burger hit the wall first in the open women’s 100m freestyle, stopping the clock at 1:01.94. Eden Glover (NSW) and Ruby Smorgon finished in second and third spots respectively.
Negri brothers Dante, 12, and Benno, 14, also made their mark in the pool, collecting first place in their age group events. Benno enjoyed an outstanding 2011/12 season, which saw him collect gold in the 200m backstroke at the Australian Age Championships held in Adelaide in April.
NSW swimmer Glover dominated the 12-13-year-old girl’s events, while Brooke Roseman, 11, competed strongly to take out the titles in her age group. Her sister, 13-year-old Paige, also enjoyed some strong racing.
Maccabiah nominee Rodney Chizik is showing significant improvement in the lead-up to team selections and will be one to watch over the coming months.
There were also several strong showings in the masters’ events, including from Clive Aaron, Peter Bloom and Jeff Sher.
