Fox up for NSWIS awards

AUSTRALIAN Olympic hero Jessica Fox is in the running to win three gongs at the upcoming NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Awards ceremony.

Fox, 19, has been nominated for the Academic Excellence, Mizuno Most Memorable Moment and Sydney City Toyota Female Athlete of the Year awards after an outstanding 12 months, which saw her rise to prominence as one of the best canoeists in the world.

“It’s a great honour,” Fox said.

“There are so many very talented athletes at the NSWIS who are worthy of these awards and I’m very excited to be nominated again.

“The NSWIS has supported me since I was 14 with so many valuable services, and this year was no different.”

Fox’s career took off when she won silver in the K1 event at the London Olympics, before winning the C1 at this year’s ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships and ICF Canoe Slalom Junior/U23 World Championships.

She then topped all comers in both categories at the ICF World Series.

“The year after the Olympics was an opportunity for me to set myself the challenge of racing two classes again,” Fox said.

“While there is still much to work on in K1, I’m happy with my progression in both events and I’m looking forward to 2014.”

Fox’s younger sister Noemie is also up for the Out & About Marketing and Media Junior Athlete of the Year award, after she too won gold at the ICF Canoe Slalom Junior/U23 World Championships.

The 16-year-old also took out the national championships and gold at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival earlier this year.
