JEWISH law professionals and Victorian MPs gathered at East Melbourne Hebrew Congregation last week to welcome the 2017 Legal Year in words and song.

The ceremony, convened by East Melbourne’s Rabbi Dovid Gutnick, saw judges, Queen’s Counsels, Senior Counsels, barristers and solicitors converge on the historic shul.

A highlight of the ceremony was chazanut and music performed by Rabbi Dovid Rubinfeld of Melbourne Hebrew Congregation, musician Kobi Oved of Caulfield Hebrew Congregation, and Danny Segal and Paul Glass of the Segal and Glass duo.

After prayers for the legal profession, Rabbi Gutnick gave a justice-themed drash in which he reflected that the law presented to Moses was on two tablets, rather than a single one. Similarly the law comprises obligations between humans and God and humans interacting with one another, he said.

Barrister Ron Merkel, formerly a Federal Court judge, delivered a tribute to the late Alan Goldberg QC, who passed away last year, and after his words, Kaddish was recited.

The ceremony was capped off by a kiddush in the East Melbourne shul hall.
