ONE of Melbourne’s top kosher restaurants will open in Bondi before Pesach.

Laffa Bar, which has served the Melbourne Jewish community for more than a decade, is expected to open in Hall Street in Bondi. Owner Reuven Nahoom is in the final stages of talks with Glick’s, to take over their lease and move into the property located between Hadassa Kosher Butchery and Katzy’s.

Nahoom told The AJN this week that after positive feedback from NSW guests at his Melbourne eatery he decided to open a Sydney shop. “I have been to Sydney a few times now and I strongly believe that Sydney’s food culture is ready for the new taste of kosher modern Middle Eastern cuisine.”

Nahoom said he is extremely excited to open the shop in “beautiful and vibrant” Sydney.

“I don’t think there are enough kosher establishments in Sydney.

“We want Laffa Bar Sydney to draw all crowds from kosher to non-kosher so that everyone can enjoy our food and culture.”

The opening of Laffa Bar could be a decisive moment in the Sydney kashrut wars, with an ongoing battle between Community Kashrut and the Kashrut Authority for Nahoom’s business.

While the businessman has not made a decision which way he will go, he told The AJN that he will use the “finest produce” that he has been using in his Melbourne restaurant.

“My butcher, Continental Kosher Butchers, and I have a longstanding relationship and we both have the same understanding of quality meats.

“I want Laffa Bar Sydney to be of the same standard as Melbourne so that customers will experience the same quality and service.”

The AJN understands that in order to use those butchers, Nahoom may try and get kosher certification from both Community Kashrut and Kosher Australia, which is based in Melbourne and provides a hechsher to his current shop.

It would be the first time that Kosher Australia gave a hechsher to a fully-fledged kosher restaurant in Sydney.
