Maccabi continues slide

NORTH Caulfield Maccabi has slumped to its third consecutive defeat, going down to Berwick City away 2-0 on the weekend.

NORTH Caulfield Maccabi has slumped to its third consecutive defeat, going down to Berwick City away 2-0 on the weekend.

The visitors were on the back foot early and struggled to contain a rampaging opposition.

Without the incredible goalkeeping abilities of Famara Djiba, North Caulfield would have found itself trailing just minutes into the game.

The match began to open up, but neither team was able to capitalise as they went in at 0-0 at half time.

The visitors looked the better of the two sides in the opening stages of the second period, but it was the hosts that managed to find the net first, scoring against the run of play when a thunderous strike bulleted past the outstretched Djiba.

North Caulfield continued to press forward in search of an equaliser and it was substitute Brad Blumenthal who looked the most likely, but the young gun couldn’t convert his opportunities.

Debutant Benji Schneider also managed to cause some havoc for the Berwick defence, but he too failed to get Maccabi on the board.

As the away team pushed hard to level the scores in the latter stages of the match, its defence was opened up on the counter attack and suffered another shock blow when Berwick sealed the win with a second goal.

The side now moves down to sixth spot on the ladder with four wins and four losses.

The Reserves put in an excellent display in their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Berwick, on the back of superb efforts from Yuval Ashkenazi and Ricardo. The Thirds picked up their fourth win of the season thanks to a 4-2 win over Glen Waverley.

North Caulfield plays Beaumaris at 3pm on Sunday, June 16 at Caulfield Park (Melway: 59 B12).
