HUNDREDS of Maccabi Hakoah Junior FC players took to the field for their opening round matches of the Eastern Suburbs Football Association season last weekend.

Thirty Maccabi sides played in rainy and windy conditions, and there were mixed results across the board, but no shortage of enthusiasm and skill.

The junior club’s administrator Mick Vasin said it was especially great to see the U6s and U7s teams get their first game day under way, as well as the club’s Maroubra Hub starting up several weeks ago.

“The junior club has embarked on a new strategy this year, aligning ourselves with the same coaches being used at Hakoah FC for their skills acquisition program,” Vasin said.

“We are hoping to see the benefits of this over the next few years. We have a great committee and everyone is working very hard to ensure all kids get the best coaching and playing experience we can give them.”

The Maccabi Hakoah Senior Football Club also started their season last weekend. The club has two new teams, led by Jordan Besser in the all-age division three, and by Daniel Lowy in all-age division five.

“This year we have a very unique situation which shows the depth of players at the club – three teams playing division two,” club president Mike Evans said.

“The team from last year that came fourth as well as the two third division teams that came first and second in 2016.

“This should make for some even more interesting intra-club rivalry in 2017.”

In the men’s comp, the all-age division one side lost 2-1 against Mascot in a game that got away due to untaken opportunities.

The Nathan Ryba-led team had a tough initiation into second division with a game cut short due to a sickening head clash which saw Maccabi players Sean Lurie and Zac Rabie taken to hospital, as well as one Mascot player. The game was cut short to 65 minutes, and Maccabi lost it 2-1.

The all-age division three team lost 5-2 and the division four team had an easy 11-0 win, while the over 45s A side had a 6-0 win over the club’s B side.

The women’s division one all-age team, promoted up a division, were beaten 2-0 by Coogee, while the division four team had a bye.
