FEEDING seriously ill babies breast milk rather than formula has shown to increase survival rates dramatically.

But many mothers, for a variety of reasons, are unable to supply sufficient milk to meet their babies’ needs. That is why Australian Friends of Magen David Adom (MDA) is planning to open Israel’s first mother’s milk bank later this year.

“The Mothers Milk bank is an innovative and revolutionary project, one that will impact families across Israel for many generations to come,” MDA NSW executive director Doron Lazarus said.

“It will be a world-leading facility, offering the very latest in pasteurisation techniques and procedures.”

He added, “Breast milk is a perfectly balanced source of nutrition, containing active antibodies to fight infection. It is the most beneficial food for infants.

“The complex nutrients in mothers’ milk are unique and give the baby the very best start.”

The breast milk bank will be the main focus of MDA NSW’s annual campaign this year, with the main event, “Big Laughs for Little Lives”, featuring US Jewish comedian Elon Gold, to be held on the evening of Sunday, August 12.

“If you are looking for an evening with a real difference, while supporting Israel, then don’t miss this campaign event,” Lazarus said.

A Young MDA event, also featuring Gold, will be held the following evening.

“Last year supporters of Magen David Adom in NSW helped to distribute more funds to MDA Israel than any other year,” Lazarus said.

“As a result, MDA in Israel was able to buy even more emergency vehicles and equipment that are already saving the lives of mothers, fathers, sons and daughters – just like yours and mine. Supporters of Magen David Adom, are quite literally helping to save lives each and every day in Israel.”
