SIX Jewish boys featured at the recent Under-12 NSW State Football tournament as part of the title-winning Metro East representative side.

Adam Strasser, Zach Pilemer, Zac Sapsford, Jordan Cohen, Ryan Collins and Jesse Hirschowitz got the nod following a rigorous selection process, beating out more than 80 hopefuls from Eastern Suburbs, Canterbury and St George associations for six of 15 spots on the roster.

On its way to the title, Metro East faced six other city-based teams and three country teams.

Despite the high-quality opposition on offer, the boy’s side only lost a single game during the weeklong round robin and entered its final game against the table-topping Metro North knowing that a win for Metro East meant the title was theirs and a draw would hand the crown to Metro North.

In the championship match Metro East romped to an emphatic 3-0 victory, with all six boys playing major roles for the triumphant city side. Four of the six – Strasser, Pilemer, Sapsford and Collins – will be playing with Hakoah Sydney City East FC’s new youth team next season in the Under-13s Premier League.

The boys form part of a young but imposing roster, which will be managed by Hakoah first grade coach Mark Robertson.

Hakoah president Michael Katz said, “It is wonderful to see the achievements of [the four boys], who are proving themselves to be amongst the best players in the state.”

“The fact that these boys are choosing to play for Maccabi Hakoah FC is affirmation that we are producing an elite football product that players from our community want to be a part of, and that these boys are capable of competing at the highest levels.”

With Robertson’s son, Alex, who scored all three goals in the Metro East’s win over Metro North, also playing for the squad next year, Hakoah’s young charges look set to take the Under-13 league by storm.
