Warriors plumb new depths

SUNDAY saw a severely depleted Maccabi Warriors team cop an absolute shellacking from championship favourites, the Warrandyte Venom, 105-55.

A brave Warriors squad, which has been devastated by injuries and illness, was forced to field a team comprising bench and reserves players, and simply lacked the depth and talent to run with a supremely gifted Warrandyte outfit.

Rising star Benji Tamir (16 points) and Adam Klas (12 points) provided the home crowd with some scarce highlights, while Eric Witschel and Jeremy Dukes battled hard.

The Warriors managed to pace Warrandyte throughout the first half and were only 14 points down at the main break, before the Venom’s second-half shooting barrage blew out the margin.

Warrandyte Venom’s premier import guard, Tron Smith, was unstoppable with 36 points.

To make matters worse for Maccabi, Warrandyte shot a blistering 56 per cent from the field, as well as netting 11 threes. Maccabi hopes to get several senior players back for this week’s game against Coburg, and will be desperate to perform.

Maccabi is at the bottom of the division two ladder, with only three wins from 17 matches.

The Warriors play Coburg on Sunday at 1.30pm at Bialik Stadium.
