MACCABI Warriors youth league coach Al Westover has hailed the side’s inaugural season as a “huge success”, despite a second-last finish and 3-17 record.

The young Warriors ended their first year in Big V Youth League Division 2 on a sour note last Saturday night, going down 62-60 away to cellar-dwellers Warrnambool Seahawks, but Westover says that result should take nothing away from his player’s development.

“The players have all improved throughout the season, and competed well against all teams,” the former NBL champion coach told The AJN.

“We had our chances at Warrnambool, but just came up a bit short against a tall and inspired home side.”

Jack Pincus, who averaged a team-high 13 points during the season, recorded a double-double in the narrow defeat with 16 points and 10 rebounds, while point guard Max Kausman also had 16.

Andrew Sharp chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.

While on-court success has been sparse for Maccabi, a two-game winning streak in June that included a 63-57 victory away to Western Port showed what the side is capable of, according to Westover.

“The highlight for me was winning two in a row, with the big win being at finals bound Western Port.”

Maccabi’s senior Warriors, meanwhile, play their final game of the season on Saturday night away to Collingwood All-stars.
